One clinician, from first appointment to review

Kim holds a first-class honours degree in Adult Nursing and the Independent and Supplementary Prescribing qualification, and is registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council with the prescriber annotation on her record.

That combination is why assessment, treatment and prescribing happen in one appointment here rather than being handed between people. It is also why she can decline to prescribe — and will explain the reasoning rather than leaving you to guess.

What an Independent Prescriber can do

A healthcare professional who has completed additional accredited training and holds legal authority to prescribe within their scope of competence, taking full clinical responsibility for the assessment and the prescribing decision. For patients, it means four concrete things.

One appointment

Assessment and prescribing take place together where it is clinically appropriate.

No referral step

There is no wait for a third party who has not met you.

The examiner decides

The clinician who examined you is the clinician who makes the decision.

And is accountable

Professionally accountable for that decision under the NMC Code.

A prescription is never guaranteed. An Independent Prescriber has a professional duty to prescribe only where it is safe and appropriate.

How Kim works with patients

Consultations are unhurried. A first appointment lasts 30 to 45 minutes, and you will not be shown a treatment menu.

She will ask about your medical history and the medicines you take, because both affect what is safe. She will ask what has been troubling you, which is not always the same as the treatment you booked to discuss. And she will ask what you have tried before, and how you responded.

She will then explain what she recommends, what it will cost in total, how long it is likely to take, what result you can reasonably expect and what the alternatives are — including not having treatment at all.

You are not asked to decide during the appointment. Most patients take time to consider their options, and there is no follow-up sales call.

About the qualification

Common questions

Is a nurse prescriber the same as a doctor?

No. They are different professions with different training routes. An Independent Prescriber has completed additional accredited training and holds prescribing authority within their scope of competence, with the professional accountability that carries. For the services offered at this clinic, Kim assesses, plans, treats and prescribes directly. Where something falls outside her scope, she will tell you and help you find the appropriate clinician.

Can a nurse prescriber write a private prescription?

Yes. An NMC-registered Independent Prescriber can write private prescriptions within their scope of practice and competence.

What does scope of practice mean?

It is the range of clinical activity a practitioner is trained, competent and insured to undertake. Working within it is a professional obligation, and it is the reason a clinician will sometimes decline to treat.

How do I check Kim's registration?

Search the NMC register using her name or PIN. The link is in the registration table above.

Will I always see Kim?

Yes. Every consultation and treatment at The Armstrong Clinic is carried out by Kim personally.

What if I need something Kim cannot provide?

She will tell you and, where she can, direct you to an appropriate clinician or service.
