Your appointment

What happens, in order

  1. 1

    Consultation

Kim examines the area in good light, takes a full medical history, reviews your medicines and checks for anything that would make treatment unsuitable. For leg veins this includes assessing for an underlying venous problem. A patch test is arranged where appropriate.

  2. 2

    Your plan

What is recommended, how many sessions are likely to be needed, the total cost and the result you can reasonably expect — in writing.

  3. 3

    Treatment

The session lasts 15 or 30 minutes. Most people describe quick, sharp scratches rather than pain, and anaesthetic is not usually needed. You can normally return to your usual activities immediately.

  4. 4

    Aftercare

Written instructions, given to you before you leave.

  5. 5

    Review

An appointment to assess how the area has responded and discuss whether further treatment would help.

  1. 01

    The first few days

Redness and small raised marks are normal. The treated veins often look darker before they fade, which is expected and does not mean treatment has been unsuccessful.

  2. 02

    Two to eight weeks

Most people see a visible difference in this window. The result is judged after the full course rather than after one session.

  3. 03

    Aftercare, throughout

SPF 50 daily on the treated area. Avoid saunas, steam rooms and hot baths for the period advised, and vigorous exercise for 24 to 48 hours. Avoid self-tan and sunbeds, pause retinoids and strong acids until advised otherwise, and do not pick any small scabs.

Risks and side effects

Treatment does not prevent new thread veins from forming — the factors that caused yours usually remain.

Common

Redness, mild swelling, bruising, small marks and temporary darkening of the treated vein.

Less common

Temporary lightening or darkening of the skin, more likely in darker skin tones or after sun exposure. Small blisters. Matting, where fine new vessels appear nearby.

Rare

Scarring, infection, persistent pigment change and ulceration.

Treatment is not carried out without an assessment first. That assessment is what establishes whether there is an underlying venous problem — and on the legs, there sometimes is.

Common questions

How much does thread vein removal cost in London?

At The Armstrong Clinic it is £175 for a 15 minute session and £300 for a 30 minute session. Across London, single sessions generally range from around £150 to £400. When comparing clinics, check whether the price is quoted per session or per area, and ask for an estimated total rather than a starting price, as most people need more than one session.

Do I need a consultation before treatment?

Yes. Treatment is not carried out without an assessment first. This establishes whether you are suitable, whether there is an underlying venous problem and what result is realistic.

Is thread vein removal available on the NHS in London?

Not usually. Thread veins are treated as a cosmetic concern. The NHS may investigate and treat varicose veins where they cause symptoms such as pain, swelling, skin changes or ulceration, which is a different condition. If Kim thinks this applies to you, she will advise you to see your GP.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on the number, size and depth of the vessels and how your skin responds. Small isolated facial veins are sometimes resolved in one 15 minute session, more extensive facial veins commonly need two to three, and leg veins often three to four. You will be given an estimate at your consultation.

Is it painful?

Most people describe quick, sharp scratches or a hot pinprick rather than pain. Sessions are short and anaesthetic is not usually needed. Facial veins are more sensitive than leg veins.

Can I go back to work afterwards?

Usually. The treated area will be red for a few hours to a few days. There is no dressing and no recovery time, although you may prefer not to have facial treatment immediately before an event.

Do you treat thread veins on the legs as well as the face?

Yes. Leg veins are assessed for underlying venous disease before treatment.

Can I be treated in Marbella instead?

Yes. Thread vein treatment is available in Marbella with the same clinician. If you divide your time between the two, your course can continue in either.

Describe the area you would like treated. A general description is enough — clinical detail is better discussed at consultation, where it is properly recorded.
