Why thread veins are common on the Costa del Sol
Cumulative UV exposure is the most significant modifiable cause of facial thread veins. Here that exposure is year-round rather than seasonal, which changes both how common the vessels are and how early they appear.
Heat, which dilates surface blood vessels, and wind off the sea also contribute. Thread veins tend to appear earlier and become more extensive here than in a northern European climate.
The same sun exposure affects aftercare, because it increases the risk of pigment change following treatment. That is why the timing of treatment and the aftercare plan are discussed carefully at your consultation rather than handed over as a printed sheet.

Aftercare in this climate
Standard aftercare assumes a northern European climate and needs adjusting here. This is the version that applies on the Costa del Sol.
- SPF 50, daily and reapplied
- On the treated area, through the day rather than once in the morning.
- Choose the month
- Autumn and winter are generally better for treatment, allowing the skin to settle before periods of high UV.
- Sea and pools
- Avoid for the period advised after each session.
- Heat and direct sun
- Avoid saunas, hot tubs and prolonged direct sun for the period advised.
- Arriving with a tan
- The risk of pigment change is higher if you have significant recent sun exposure or a tan at the time of treatment.
- If you travel
- Sessions can be spaced around your travel, and treatment in London and Marbella counts toward the same course.

Consultation
Kim examines the area in good light, takes a full medical history, reviews your medicines and discusses how your sun exposure affects the plan. A patch test is arranged where appropriate.

The session lasts 15 or 30 minutes. Most people describe quick, sharp scratches rather than pain, and anaesthetic is not usually needed.

Risks and side effects
Pigment change carries a higher risk here than in the UK, because of the sun exposure before and after treatment.
Common
Redness, mild swelling, small marks, bruising and temporary darkening of the treated vein.
Less common
Temporary lightening or darkening of the skin, which carries a higher risk here. Small blisters. Matting, where fine new vessels appear nearby.
Rare
Scarring, infection and persistent pigment change.
Aftercare written for a UK winter does not survive a Costa del Sol summer. The plan is built around where you actually are.

Common questions
Do you speak English?
Yes. Every consultation is in English with a UK-trained and UK-registered clinician.
Is treatment riskier here because of the sun?
The treatment is the same. The risk of pigment change afterwards is higher with significant sun exposure, which is why aftercare here is stricter and why autumn and winter are generally better months. Kim will advise based on your skin type and lifestyle.
Can I have treatment while on holiday?
It is possible, but worth planning. The treated area needs strict sun protection afterwards, and the treated veins often look darker before they fade. Discuss timing at your consultation.
Can I start in Marbella and finish in London?
Yes. Sessions at either clinic count toward the same course, with the same clinician and records.
How many sessions will I need?
Facial veins commonly need one to three sessions and leg veins usually three to four. You will be given an estimate at your consultation.
How much is it in euros?
Euro pricing is confirmed at the clinic. A 15 minute session is £175 and a 30 minute session is £300, and payment can be made in euros or pounds.
Are you registered to practise in Spain?
Spanish registration detail is to be confirmed. You are welcome to ask to see this.
Can I swim after treatment?
Not immediately. You will be given a specific period to wait before swimming in the sea or a pool.
